“Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.” -C.G. Jung
I go to psychoanalysis every Monday morning at 8:30. In a previous post, I shared a few reasons why I make my own therapy a priority.
After my session, exploring dreams, memories, fantasies and desires, I met one of my patients down at the river for a walk.
It was so clear to me during our walk how much my ability to meet my own darkness was allowing me to help my patient meet hers. My willingness to meet everything that arose within her, and not turn away, was allowing her to stay with her experience, however uncomfortable.
We need to start here, where we are, with ourselves, before we can hope to help anyone else.
Get to know your own darkness.
